Lolita in the Spotlight 1

Some of you are still thinking that this Lolita stuff is just too obscure and strange to wear in broad daylight. Others are just too timid to be seen out and about in it, especially if the Lolita community in your area is still small (or nonexistent) and I’m here to prove to you that it isn’t completely obscure and while it may be strange, plenty of celebrities are hopping on the bandwagon!
First up, we’ve got a celebrity I would never have expected to see sporting Angelic Pretty, but here she is:

Lil Mama, huge in the Hip Hop scene, and here she is donning a colourful Angelic Pretty print. The sneakers and crop top underneath don’t make this a very typical Lolita coordinate, but at least it’s on the map now.
Next up (and no surprise to most) is Lady Gaga:

Dressed in all white, she makes a rather lovely Shiro-Loli. During her time in Japan, she spent most of it in Lolita and even had a Hello Kitty theme while she was visiting a Japanese talk show. Cool stuff.
And lastly….:

A darling Hayley Williams (also blonde now to the dismay of many fans) wears a Bodyline dress for Paramore’s latest music video. I’m not a fan of the ankle socks or lack of headgear, but it’s still a very cute dress and again, puts Lolita on the map.
So if you were unsure about Lolita, it’s popularity, or any other concerns regarding it I hope this helped you a little bit.

Drowning in Sweets

When I think of Sweet Lolita, I think goodies. Like doughnuts and cookies, candies and cakes, tea and chocolate. And for good reason, they’re common and popular themes in Sweet Lolita.
Just take a gander on one of the popular Sweet Lolita brand websites, like Angelic Pretty or Baby, The Stars Shine Bright. You’ll find dresses and skirts in magical prints with fairytale characters, an abundance of pink and white and mint green, and designs and jewellery resembling pastries.
For the girly-girl at heart, this is heaven. For someone like me…it’s cute in small doses and that’s it.
But that’s not to say I don’t like some Sweet Lolita, especially if it’s in black or has stripes in it. I’m a sucker for stripes.
Sweet, as you may be realizing, is characterized by it’s cuteness, childishness, and “over-the-top”-ness.
However, I like a toned down version of Sweet Lolita. I’ll happily take one of those Magical Etoile skirts or Whip Magic JSKs as long as I can pair it with a simple black or white blouse, socks and rocking horse shoes. No giant head-eating bow, no layers of sweets jewellery, and no cake or candy shaped purses.
Chances are, you’ve already got a pretty busy print, so the rest of the coordinate should be low-key. SHOULD. But I’m not a Sweet Lolita, so I’m not going to tell them how to wear their fashion. This is just my preference.
Speaking of Sweet Lolita, I did make a skirt that could possibly qualify. It’s black and pink, but true to my word…it’s toned down. No bows or lace on this piece of work:

J’aime Gothic Lolita

Sorry that it’s taken me forever to update this blog. I can honestly say I forgot that it existed…I use other blogging services more often, like Livejournal.
But since I’m here, I want to talk about my favorite category of Lolita. And that’s Gothic Lolita.
This is probably the most well-known type of Lolita, even though Sweet is more popular. Gothic Lolita looks pretty…well, Goth.
We’re talking Victorian style Goth. So it’s black, mostly. The most common color scheme is black and white. For example, a white blouse, a black skirt or jumperskirt, a pair of black stockings, maybe a lacy headdress and a pair of chunky black mary janes could qualify as a very simple gothic coordinate.
Moi-même-Moitié is the most popular and coveted of Gothic Lolita brands and it is located in Japan. This brand was started by Mana, former guitarist of Malice Mizer, and he coined the terms Elegant Gothic Lolita and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat in order to describe his designs and what his brand sells.
Of course, this isn’t the only place to acquire Gothic Lolita clothing, you can make do with plenty of other brands that sell black items. Baby The Stars Shine Bright have a few black dresses and jumperskirts that work nicely. Bodyline sells gothic and punk Lolita clothing for very reasonable prices and of course you can always make your own.
But just because it’s black doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Gothic Lolita. Anything with an overabundance of lace or bows is probably leaning towards Sweet. Gothic Lolita is a little bit less cutesy and that’s probably why I like it so much.
Mydress
This dress easily qualifies as Gothic Lolita. The decoration is minimal and the print has a decidedly gothic feel to it. And as you can see, it’s from Innocent World, which doesn’t exactly specialize in gothic attire, so you really CAN find this type of Lolita within other brands.
Next entry will discuss Sweet Lolita and why I’ll never wear it. ^_^
